While searching through Tech Edge Podcasts Dr. Guy Trainin I came across the Tech Edge, Mobile Learning in the Classroom, History Apps video. This one is a great one for me being into history and concentrating on social studies. There are literally hundreds of great videos to chose from on the Tech EDGE channel. Dr. Guy Trainin is a professor at Nebraska University who is dedicated to teaching and educating other about technology in the classroom. The YouTube channel states that they are focused on innovation in teaching, learning and teacher education. As well as their current work being focused on iPads in the Classroom. This is a really cool channel to explore with many resources for both teachers and students alike. They have everything for any type of education like teaching in the classroom, technology for professionals, English language learners, early childhood, and of course iPad applications for across content areas. Dr. Guy Trainin has also supplied others who are interested in what he is doing with his email address. If you would like more info email:[email protected].

The first app that I took a look at for this review was one of my favorites The History Channel App. I thoroughly enjoy the History channel. It is one of my favorites to watch when I am not engaged in other activities like school work, reading, or my duties around the house. This app has all the shows that can be viewed on the History channel. Some of the shows are free to watch which is great. However, for the bulk of the shows you will have to have a subscription to some sort of provider or to the app. Other than that this could be a tool used to add on to instruction in history classes. The biggest thing to watch out for is some of the shows on the History channel may not be exactly the most suitable for the classroom environment.
The second app that I took a look at and downloaded was The Smithsonian App. This is a really cool app that has tons of information built into it. This is a free app and that makes it a great deal for the education community. When you open the app up it has options for you to explore like videos, shows, and create a channel. The find the show portion of the app is the best in my honest opinion as it has the bulk of learning materials in it. When you enter this part of the app the options are featured, air & space, culture, history, kids, science & nature, and all shows. Each category has great videos that are designed for the particular category. These are some pretty awesome add-ons for the classroom depending on what the instruction will be for the day. There are hundreds of different videos that cover different areas of education at the disposal of the teacher and learner. I think that this would be a very useful app for the classroom.
The third app that I downloaded was the Today in History App. This is a very awesome app to use as it has all kinds of historical information that is brought to you each day and the best part about it is that it is free! Being a lover of history this app really appeals to me. At the bottom of the home screen the app gives you option to view the headlines, events, births, deaths, and holidays. I think that this would be an ideal app to use with students to break the ice for the day and get them interested in the great history lesson that they are about to receive. I like how easy it is to use and it also includes many pictures of the historical events that you are viewing. I am 100% positive that I will continue to use this app from this day forward. I also recommend this app to anyone who is interested in history.
